DISSOLVE AUDIO TO:

GANDALF
Do you have the ring, Frodo?

FADE IN IMAGE of FRODO.

FRODO
Yes.

GANDALF
May I see it?

FRODO hands GANDALF the Ring, somewhat reluctantly.

GANDALF
Do you see any markings?

FRODO
No. There are none.

GANDALF looks carefully at the Ring for a moment, then tosses it into the fire. FRODO starts forward, alarmed. GANDALF holds him back. He waits for a moment, then reaches in and removes the ring, and holds it up.

CU of ring. The fire-runes slowly become visible.

FRODO
[Transfixed] What does it say?

GANDALF
[Gravely] It is the end of a very old verse.

FADE OUT

DISSOLVE INTO FAINT MUSIC

GANDALF (voice over)
Three rings for the elven kings under the sky...

DISSOLVE TO: Image of ELROND in his court at Rivendell

DISSOLVE TO: Legolas, in front of the company, looking into the distance with the wind in his hair.

GANDALF (VO)
Seven for the dwarf lords in their halls of stone...

DISSOLVE TO: GIMLI on a grassy hill in front of the company, axe in hand, approaching camera.

DISSOLVE TO: Moria interior

GANDALF (VO)
Nine for the mortal men doomed to die...

DISSOLVE TO: ARAGORN emerging slowly from a shadow.

DISSOLVE TO: slow dolly towards BOROMIR at ELROND's table, with the first faint gleam of evil desire in his eyes.

GANDALF (VO)
One for the dark lord on his dark throne...

DISSOLVE TO: BLACK RIDER cresting a hilltop overlooking the Shire, pausing, looking down.

FADE TO BLACK

GANDALF (VO)
...in the land of Mordor, where the shadows lie.

DISSOLVE TO: SAM and FRODO marching down the road from the Shire together, FRODO suddenly turning around to the camera, sensing danger.

Music becomes more lively, more dramatic, full of drums and cymbals.

CUT TO:

COMPANY in a circle around a campfire, attacked by wolves. Gandalf motions, and the tops of the trees burst into flame.

GANDALF (VO)
One Ring to rule them all...

CUT TO: Saruman in Orthanc, leaning on his staff, smiling.

CUT TO: Aragorn in Balin's tomb in Moria, swivelling his head around to face the camera.

CUT TO: Door in Moria shattering, orcs spilling into the room.

GANDALF (VO)
One Ring to find them...

CUT TO: BLACK RIDERS flying on the ford of Rivendell, trying to cut off FRODO.

CUT TO: shape of GOLLUM slinking in the shadows.

GANDALF (VO)
One Ring to bring them all...

CUT TO: FRODO, alone, enveloped in the darkness of the Ring, facing the advent of the RIDERS on Weathertop.

GANDALF (VO)
And in the darkness bind them...

CUT TO: Galadriel standing at the mirror, wearing her ring.

CUT TO: The Company fleeing a winged Nazgul and orcs on the bank of the Anduin.

CUT TO: FRODO, near death, on Glorfindel's horse, watching as the horse-like waves of Elrond's flood rise to consume the BLACK RIDERS.

CUT TO BLACK

GANDALF (VO)
In the Land of Mordor, where the shadows lie.

FADE IN TO: Gandalf on the narrow bridge in Moria, in the growing shadow of the Balrog.
