Ode to Melian

by Old Took

As Eärendil’s ship sails by,
The mariner at the helm;
He surveys the grandeur of the sky,
The master of his realm.

Every night he looks in awe
And feasts upon the sight;
Each time better than before,
He marvels in delight.

Then one day he caught a glimpse,
A vision strange and rare.
He's never seen such beauty since,
Nor sunset quite as fair.

The sight of such angelic form
Still takes his breath away.
Though ages pass, his heart is torn
As though 'twas yesterday.

For Melian the fair saw he
Descend to Middle Earth.
He'd never seen such majesty
Nor stone of greater worth.

Her laughter set his heart aflame
With voice like nightingale;
Eärendil’s never been the same
Since when he first set sail.

But then one day her voice was heard
Through woods and far away;
Thingol's heart was greatly stirred
He sought her night and day.

That sweet voice enchanted him,
And filled him with desire.
He left his throne and left his kin,
His heart like burning fire.

He hunted her for time untold,
Till came he to a glade.
Not knowing how he felt so bold,
Drew to her side, and stayed.

And so there came the joining
Of the mightiest of folk -
Valar Queen and Sindar King
Of whom the legends spoke.

The majesty of Melian
Still stirs my heart to rhyme.
The fairest seen by anyone
In story, or in time.
