Fellwalking in the Shire
by Old Took

I like to go a-walking
in the Shire's many lanes.
The sights around me take my breath
but more there still remains.

I take my trusty walking stick
and start along my way;
My aging frame will bear me on
Despite what others say!

The peacefulness of Bywater
Can soothe a hurting heart.
The eyes grow fond of such a scene
'tis anguish to depart.

The shimmer of the morning sun
- a sight I know so well -
reflected in the rippling lake,
- Such riches I can't tell!

And as the lazy sunshine climbs
behind the eastern hills,
I slowly take a breath of air
-my heart with laughter fills.

The little wand'ring clumps of trees
that scurry out of sight,
dot the yellow cornfields there,
with colours green and bright.

The springtime glow of leaf and bough
Speaks music to my eyes;
The budding signs of life abounds
and round me heaven lies.

I just get enough of this,
the hills and fells so fine;
I can't abide to be inside
and miss the warm sunshine.

According to the lore-masters
Down Michael Delving way,
the Tooks have always been like this
Since the beginning day.

And who am I to argue then?
As health remains to me,
I'll take unto the hillsides
'cos it's where I'd rather be.

–Old Took
