The Affair with Shelob
by Young Dee

The Affair With Shelob

Down a road ever winding
Into a cavern mouth dark and menacing
It cannot be that their hearts should falter
Then, alas, cities will totter
And fall.

A slinking guide leads the way
Into that place of unspeakable sway
To all mortal-minds will indefinitely coil
And each different predicament will foil
Except they simply mustn’t.

Such a burden, such a hope
Hanging by an attenuating rope
Pressuring journey, hazardous expectations
But all vices have hailed citations
So, therefore,

Devious trickery or sworn loyalty
They were lured into the lair of an antiquity
To feed and satisfy
Two hungers* which they must defy
Or else.

By enchanted light and elven blade
Walking among the shadows of a gloomy trade
Out a thing which approach, grab, and stun
Between its legs and meshes spun
Our hero, taller and fairer than most.

Define simple good fellowship
And the very great goodness of friendship
Up toward a rotund belly he strove
Deep and fell out of love
For their dear life.

Departing creature or a leaving evil stare,
It wholly depends on who you are.
Now senseless, now in pain
Surely it is the nature of a dark stain,
Finally rid of.

*Gollum’s for the Ring and Shelob’s for nourishment.
